Jerald Garcia, MD

Interventional Pain Specialist/Anesthesiologist

Dr. Garcia, a double board-certified pain specialist and anesthesiologist, is the founder and CEO of the Hawaii Institute for Pain / HI Pain. He completed his fellowship in Advanced Interventional Pain Medicine at the University Hospitals of Cleveland / Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, where he served as chief fellow and authored a chapter for the textbook, Spinal Injections and Peripheral Nerve Blocks. He completed both his internship and Anesthesiology residency at the same prestigious institution. He earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School and his undergraduate degree in Psychology also from the 'U of M' wherein he graduated with highest honors (Summa Cum Laude). Dr. Garcia is active with the Hawaii Pain Society, the Hawaii Medical Association and the Philippine Medical Association of Hawaii. He has given numerous talks and lectures on Pain Management and related topics locally and nationally.

For 7 years in a row and counting, Dr. Garcia has been named a “Top Doctor” in Pain Medicine by Honolulu Magazine and Castle Connolly. He is also a recent recipient of the prestigious Progress Award for outstanding contribution and achievement in the field of Healthcare & Medicine given by the United Filipino Council of Hawaii’s (UFCH), the oldest umbrella Filipino-American organization in Hawaii.  

Dr. Garcia is an avid golfer, a frustrated surfer and a professional traveler. In addition to English, he speaks fluent Tagalog and Visayan (Cebuano). In his OR, you will hear Hawaiian Music playing in the background.

Josianna Henson, MD

Interventional Pain Specialist/Anesthesiologist

Dr. Henson is a double board-certified Pain Specialist and Anesthesiologist. She completed her fellowship in Advanced Interventional Pain Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and her residency in Anesthesiology at Stanford University Medical Center. She obtained her MD degree from the University of Colorado School of Medicine wherein she was awarded membership in the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. For college, Dr. Henson graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. 

Dr. Henson is an academic presidential scholar and a merit research scholar. Her extensive research involvement has culminated in multiple poster presentations in academic society meetings nationwide and publications in several peer-reviewed medical journals.  

During her free time, Dr. Henson enjoys hiking, snorkeling and discovering new Maui beaches. In her OR, you will hear a mix of 80s and 90s music playing in the background.

Calvin Chen, DO

Interventional Pain Specialist/Physiatrist

Dr. Chen is a fellowship-trained, board-certified interventional pain specialist and physiatrist. He completed his fellowship in Advanced Interventional Pain Medicine at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA and his residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra Northwell in Manhasset, NY where he served as chief resident. Dr. Chen obtained his medical degree from the New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine and his undergraduate degree from the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL where he majored in Exercise Physiology with minors in Chemistry and Sports Medicine and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Dr. Chen has authored several peer-reviewed journal publications on various pain-related topics and has presented his findings in academic conferences nationwide. Dr. Chen is active with many academic societies and is affiliated with the American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM), American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R), American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP), among others.

A health buff and beach lover, Dr. Chen had once worked as a certified personal trainer and a New York State lifeguard prior to pursuing a career in medicine. In addition to English, he speaks conversational Chinese (Mandarin). In his OR, you will hear chill/soft pop and country music playing in the background.

Jeffrey Viernes, APRN-CNS

Clinical Nurse Specialist

Jeff is an advanced practice registered nurse who graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in nursing from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He then proceeded to obtain his Master’s degree in Nursing from the same university with primary focus on acute care and adult-gerontology. In addition to his expertise in pain management, Jeff also has a special interest in acute care, adult gerontology, and education. He is certified by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and his affiliations include Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society of Nursing, Phi Theta Kappa, Kauai Community College Chapter, Association of American Critical-Care Nurses, among others. Jeff’s hobbies include hiking and going to the beach. In addition to English, Jeff is also fluent in Tagalog and Ilocano.

Jennifer Wilson, MSN, FNP-C

Nurse Practitioner

Jennifer Wilson is a Family Nurse Practitioner, FNP, that is certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. She graduated with a master’s degree from Hawaii Pacific University in 2015 with her FNP degree and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in 2012. She was born and raised on Oahu and is part native Hawaiian. She began her interventional pain management career with Hawaii Institute for Pain in 2016. She also specializes in rehabilitation of workman’s compensation injuries as a nurse case manager. Her hobbies include dancing, spending time with her pomeranian chihuahua named Bella, and bargain hunting at Ross.

Kristia Leanne P.D. Fuentes, AGPCNP-BC, DNP, BSN, RN

Nurse Practitioner

Kristia Leanne is an advance practice registered nurse who obtained her doctorate degree in nursing from the University of Hawaii at Manoa which is also where she obtained her undergraduate degree in nursing. Kristia additionally holds a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Anthropology and Global Health obtained from the University of Washington in Seattle. When not at work, Kristia enjoys spending time with her husband and family and swimming at the beach.

Ivy Lou Hibbitt, APRN

Nurse Practitioner

Ivy Lou Hibbitt moved to Maui with her family from Honolulu in May 2017. She completed her Masters of Science in Nursing degree at Hawaii Pacific University in December 2015 and became a Family Nurse Practitioner with Prescriptive Authority in 2016. She has a broad experience from Internal Medicine, Family Medicine and Maternal and Women’s Health. While practicing Primary Care, she became interested in Pain Medicine to help battle opioid epidemic in the community. During her spare time, she loves to play badminton and golf. She also plays guitar with her 4-year old son. Ivy Lou loves taking care of underserved communities and one of her charity works involves doing medical missions at the indigenous tribal area of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar.
